Deadly Fire in New Matadi Estate Highlights Urgent Need for Fire Safety Measures in Liberia

Fire continues to be the most costly public safety problem in Liberia for ages. The losses in human lives and injuries due to fire are exceeded only by those due to traffic accidents.

Between January 2018 and April 2024, fire incidents in Liberia accounted for 893 cases, with a total of 141 recorded deaths.

This morning, the public witnessed a very sad fire incident that claimed the lives of four (4) children in the New Matadi Estate, around the Don Bosco community.

A possible cause of the fire:

  • Defective electrical outlets
  • No smoke detectors to alert occupants
  • Exposed and uninsulated electrical wires
  • Negligence
